Are you confused, worried, maybe irritated by all the talk and controversy around ‘transgender’ issues? Whether it be school curriculum, pronouns or sports, sexual identity seems more complicated today.
Was what we learned in our high school biology classes wrong? Is it a fad? Through lively discussions and readings, we may better understand an aspect of the modern world in which we live.
LEADER: Jean Hewitt

My journey into the matter of gender identity began with the women’s movement in the 1970s. However, it was after a school friend talked about her grandchild going through the process of transition from male to female, that my interest expanded. As a former science teacher, with a lifelong interest in medicine, I began to research the broader issues around human sexual and social identity. Recent developments in the United States have made the matter of gender into a highly charged political issue, and one which we should all know more about.
(I have led this course twice at the London Society for Learning in Retirement to very positive reviews)
